Hyaluronic Acid for Men: Benefits and How to Use It

BY FREDDIE SHERIDANFOUNDER, YCODE6 MIN READ
YCODE | Hyaluronic Acid for Men

Hyaluronic acid sits on more serum labels than almost any other ingredient, and it stays one of the least understood. Most men have read the name. Far fewer could say what it does once it reaches the skin, why male skin in particular gains from it, or how to apply it so the water stays put. The short version is this. Hyaluronic acid pulls water into the upper layers of the skin and holds it there. Male skin runs thicker and oilier than female skin, so it rewards a form of the molecule small enough to travel past the surface.

This guide covers what the molecule is, what it does for men's skin, and how YCODE builds it into a routine you can actually keep.

What is hyaluronic acid actually doing?

Hyaluronic acid is a molecule that occurs naturally in skin and connective tissue. Its work is water retention. A single gram can hold up to a thousand times its weight in water1, which is why it plumps and softens the surface it sits on. Most skincare uses sodium hyaluronate, a smaller and more stable salt form that absorbs into the skin rather than resting on top of it2.

If a product says hyaluronic acid on the front and sodium hyaluronate on the ingredients list, that is normal. The salt is the form doing the work, and it is what appears on the INCI of every YCODE product that contains it. Once it is in place, it draws water in and slows the loss of moisture through the day1. A randomised controlled trial found measurable gains in hydration and elasticity after 60 days of steady use3.

Why does male skin need it more?

Male skin is around 20 to 25 per cent thicker than female skin and produces roughly twice the sebum4. That density makes it harder for a hydrating ingredient to reach the layers where it counts. A formula that only sits on the surface delivers less when the skin beneath it is thicker and oilier to begin with. This is where molecular weight decides the outcome, because hyaluronic acid comes in a range of sizes and each size travels to a different depth.

  • High molecular weight stays on the surface and forms a light film that slows water loss1. What you notice? Skin feels smoother within minutes, though the effect is mostly a surface one.
  • Medium molecular weight settles into the upper epidermis and holds water a little deeper5. What you notice? Hydration that lasts past the first hour rather than fading with the film.
  • Low molecular weight passes through the stratum corneum into the layers where skin manages its own moisture5. What you notice? Over weeks, skin that reads as less tight, and in trials, reduced wrinkle depth3.

For thicker, oilier male skin, a formula that carries lower molecular weight sodium hyaluronate is doing meaningfully more work than one that does not. It is why YCODE's Hydrating Face Serum is built with it.

Skin can be oily on top and thirsty underneath at the same time. The two are not opposites, and a good serum treats the second without feeding the first.

How should you use it in a men's routine?

The rule that matters most is where you apply it. Hyaluronic acid works by binding water, so it wants a little moisture already present on the skin. Put it on slightly damp, then seal it.

Morning. Cleanse, apply the Hydrating Face Serum to slightly damp skin, follow with the Mattifying Moisturiser, then SPF. Night. Cleanse, apply the serum, and follow with moisturiser to hold hydration in overnight. A few things worth keeping in mind. Apply to damp skin, not dry, so the serum has more water to bind to. Always follow with a moisturiser, because hyaluronic acid draws water in and needs something on top to stop that water leaving again. It is gentle enough for daily use, morning and night, and it layers well with niacinamide.

Where does sodium hyaluronate sit in the YCODE system?

YCODE uses sodium hyaluronate in two products, the Hydrating Face Serum and the Mattifying Moisturiser. In the serum it works alongside niacinamide and saccharide isomerate to deliver hydration into the skin first, laying the foundation the rest of the routine builds on. In the moisturiser, rice starch takes up surface oil while sodium hyaluronate hydrates beneath it, so shine is controlled on top and the skin under it stays supplied with water. In a 4-week consumer trial of the Hydrating Face Serum (panel of 50 men), 88 per cent said their complexion appeared renewed and well rested. If you are not sure which of the two you need first, the quiz that matches skin to formula will point you to the right starting product.

Is hyaluronic acid good for men?
Yes. Hyaluronic acid for men helps hydrate the skin, improve its texture and support a healthy barrier. It suits all skin types, including oily and acne-prone skin.
Is hyaluronic acid the same as sodium hyaluronate?
They are closely related. Sodium hyaluronate is the salt form of hyaluronic acid, smaller and more stable, and better able to travel into the skin. Most serums and moisturisers use this form, including YCODE's.
Can it help oily skin?
Yes. Oily skin is often dehydrated underneath, and that lack of water can push oil production higher. Hyaluronic acid hydrates at depth without adding shine.
How long until I see results?
Many men notice softer, more hydrated skin within days. Clinical research shows measurable improvement in hydration, elasticity and wrinkle depth after 60 days of consistent use3.

If your skin feels tight, dry underneath or oily on the surface, a lower molecular weight serum is the place to start. Read more about the Hydrating Face Serum, or take the quiz that matches skin to formula and let it choose your first product for you.

I started YCODE because most skincare was never designed for men’s skin. What I write here is what the formulators taught me, and what the trials actually found.
