INGREDIENT INTELLIGENCE

Why Hydrating Face Serum and Mattifying Moisturiser work better together

Each formula works in its own right. Together, they supply a broader range of actives, increase the amount of several shared ingredients and address both hydration and excess oil.

The Daily Essentials is built around two formulas with distinct but complementary jobs. Hydrating Face Serum draws water into the skin and delivers concentrated actives in a water-light texture. Mattifying Moisturiser helps retain that hydration, adds another layer of active support and controls the shine already visible on the surface.

The result is more complete because the products work on different parts of the same problem.

The serum draws water in and starts the deeper work

Hyaluronic acid and glycerin increase hydration. Niacinamide supports the barrier, more even tone, smoother texture, less visible pores and better control of excess oil. Prebiotics support the microbiome, while Chlorella adapts its biological support to the condition of the skin.

The biomimetic peptide begins longer-term work on collagen and structure. As that work builds, smoother texture, softer fine lines and firmer, younger-looking skin become a larger part of the result.

The moisturiser helps hydration last and controls visible shine

The moisturiser reduces water loss from the surface, allowing the hydration supplied by the serum to remain available for longer. Rice starch absorbs excess oil that has already reached the surface, providing shine control from the first application.

It does not aim to make the face completely matte. A small amount of natural reflection helps the skin look healthy in person and in photographs. The aim is controlled, even-looking skin rather than a visibly treated finish.

Chlorella provides additional support for excess oil over time, while hyaluronic acid, prebiotics and a collagen-supporting peptide reinforce the work already underway.

More actives, and more of the ones they share

The two formulas contain different supporting ingredients, giving the combined routine a greater range of activity than either product alone.

They also share Chlorella, hyaluronic acid and prebiotics. When both products are used, the skin receives a larger total amount of those important actives. That strengthens the combined support for hydration, excess oil, the microbiome and the barrier.

This is where the whole becomes more powerful than its individual parts. Difference broadens the result. Overlap reinforces it.

How they control shine together

Rice starch addresses the oil you can already see. Niacinamide and Chlorella address the amount of excess oil reaching the surface as consistent use continues.

In a double-blind split-face study, the Chlorella active reduced measured sebum by 37% after 14 days, compared with placebo.

This creates two forms of shine control. One is immediate. The other builds over time. As less excess oil reaches the surface, there is less for the mattifying ingredients to manage and the finish becomes easier to maintain through the day.

What the combined routine looked like in use

When 50 men used Hydrating Face Serum followed by Mattifying Moisturiser, morning and night, the first application was already visible:

  • 84% said their skin looked smooth
  • 88% said their facial hair felt softer

After four weeks:

  • 84% said their skin looked less shiny and more even
  • 90% said the hydration lasted
  • 92% recognised the combined action of deep hydration and moisturisation
  • 88% said their moisture barrier felt stronger

Two complete products. Different strengths. More of several important shared actives. One more powerful result.

Here is to two minutes well spent.

Do I need both a serum and a moisturiser?

Each works independently. Used together, they address more concerns, provide more active support and perform complementary jobs across hydration, oil, visible shine and the skin barrier.

Does the moisturiser make the serum work better?

It helps retain the hydration supplied by the serum and adds more Chlorella, hyaluronic acid and prebiotics. The serum also gives the moisturiser a better hydrated surface to protect.

Will using both feel heavy?

No. The serum is water-light and absorbs first. The moisturiser follows in a thin, even layer without leaving the skin greasy or coated.

What is the evidence?

The combined routine was assessed by an independent panel of 50 men using both finished products morning and night for four weeks. Chlorella was also assessed in a double-blind split-face ingredient study.

I started YCODE because most skincare was never designed for men’s skin. What I write here is what the formulators taught me, and what the trials actually found.
